Locations
How locations work
Locations tell Fundsorter where your organisation works, or where a specific funding request will happen. Locations are the first thing we filter on. We only show you opportunities available in the places you've selected, so your locations decide which funding you're eligible to see at all — get them right and everything else works better. Nationally available funding is always included automatically, no selection needed.
Choosing locations
Start by selecting the region(s) where your organisation works, or where your funding request will take place. Each region includes every district inside it by default. If you only work in part of a region, untick the districts that don't apply, or click Refine on a district to narrow it down to specific suburbs.
Refining broad locations
When you select a broad location, its areas may be pre-selected. If some don't apply, click Refine, then untick the areas your organisation doesn't work in, or that don't apply to this funding request. Use Collapse once you've finished reviewing the list.
Some refined lists include Select all and Clear all, use Select all if every area applies, Clear all if none do.
If a location shows a Refined tag, only some of the areas inside it are selected. For example, selecting a council and unticking one suburb will show that council as Refined. If every area inside a location is selected, it won't show as Refined.
Worth checking your locations
We changed how region selection works in July 2026. Selecting a region now automatically includes every district and locality inside it.
It's worth opening your locations and having a look, whichever side of that change you set up on:
- If you set up before July 2026, your locations may be narrower than you intended, and you could be missing opportunities in places you work.
- If you set up after, or during onboarding, you may be carrying a whole region when you actually serve one or two communities — which fills your matches with funding you can't realistically apply for.
Go to Manage Organisation, open your locations, and check they describe where you actually work.
Changing locations later
Locations aren't fixed after onboarding; they can be revisited any time in Manage Organisation. Onboarding only allows selection at the region and district level, so if locations haven't been refined since onboarding, they may be broader than where the organisation actually works. To add another location, click Add another region. To remove a whole region, click Remove region. To narrow a selected region, remove the districts that aren't relevant, and refine the cities and suburbs that don't apply.
A funding request can have its own locations if that project only applies to some of the places your organisation usually works. Untick "Use my organisation's locations" on that request to set them independently.
Looking to expand into a new area?
You've got two options, either works:
- On an existing request, just add the location(s) you're interested in working in, save, and re-find matches to see what's available.
- Create a brand new request just for the area you're exploring, with its own locations (and any other filters or wording you like). Keeps your current results untouched and gives you a side-by-side comparison.
A note on Auckland
Auckland is shown as area groups rather than one single Auckland-wide option: Central Auckland, North Shore, West Auckland, East Auckland, South Auckland, Rodney, Franklin (Auckland), Hibiscus Coast, and Hauraki Gulf Islands. Select the group that applies to your work, and use Refine within it if you only work in part of that group.
Tips
- Use the most specific location that fits. If you only work in one city, select that city rather than the whole region, you'll still be matched with wider opportunities that include it, such as district, regional, and national funding.
- Refine down for operational, salary, or community-focused funding. Even if your organisation's broader work extends further, narrowing to your own suburb or city focuses your matches on opportunities intended for that specific community.
- Use multiple locations if needed. If your organisation works in several separate places, add each one.
- Keep funding requests accurate. Your organisation locations describe where you work overall. A funding request can use its own locations if that project only applies to some of those places.
- If matches look thin, check locations first. Because locations filter everything, a request that's too narrowly located will return very little no matter how well it's written.
